Preparation for the Medical Outreach
The next few days were spent preparing and getting materials ready for the field. Our missionaries from Enugu and the Amankanu regions also helped in different capacities. We were able to get the Medications, hospital cards and other medical equipment for the clinic.
The day before the trip to the field I became very sick that it was almost impossible for me to make the trip, however the Lord strengthened me and though the ride was rough I made it to the field. I got to the field late evening of on January 12th which was a Saturday and couldn’t see patients that day though a lot of people had gathered all day waiting. I worshiped with the brethren at Ohubo Church.
The Medical Missions
The medical missions began actively on Monday January 14. I was still very sick but then I was the only person to see patients. Usually we go in a company of doctors and nurses and other healthcare personnel. By the time it was 9 am, the whole clinic was bursting forth with human beings.
I started seeing patients all day till midnight of the first day. God did a lot of miracles during this medical missions’ trip. We would normally start with a session of prayers before the clinic starts.
The Millions For Christ Missions Clinic is the only medical facility within about 30 to 40 kilometers radius of the Amankanu people. Some travelled for over two hours to get to the clinic. The people are in dire need of medical care. They are neglected both by the government and the Church. It is not unusual for someone to be seen looking healthy and hearty in the morning only to be found dead suddenly before the end of the day without anyone able to explain the cause of death. Such would have been the fate of Ms. Felicia who came to the clinic with the complain of cough. I had instructed my staff to screen everyone for blood pressure issues. Ms. Felicia’s blood pressure read 220/120 a very dangerous level. She presented no symptoms at all and had walked for over 45 minutes to the clinic. I admitted her temporary and started treatment for her hypertension, monitoring her blood pressure hourly. The Lord intervened in a miraculous way and the medications she received were able to bring down her pressure to a safe level by the end of the day. She was then sent to Enugu for more tests and management.
There were cases with extremely high blood sugar level and dangerously low blood sugars. Diseases of all kinds presented at the clinic day by day. There were multiple eye problems, surgical needs, even mental cases were seen.
The time was so short. The clinic lasted for less than a week. Over 200 patients were seen. There were more women and children than men. Approximately 75 women, 86 children and about 48 men. By the time we left there were lots of people who had travelled for hours to come to the clinic only to be told that the clinic was over. What a disappointment. What pain!
